It is with great sadness that we announce the death of SEAA board member and Hon Treasurer Don Turner.

William Donald Turner was born in Epsom on 14th February 1937.

Don, as many NUTS (National Union of Track Statisticians) will know, was an international ultra-runner in his youth, running for Epsom & Ewell Harriers. Don ran 65 marathons in his career was placed four times in the London to Brighton race in 1959 (2nd), 1961 (3rd), 1962 (2nd) and 1963 (3rd). He was 3rd in the gruelling 1962 Comrades Marathon, held in South Africa, running the uphill course in 6 hours 7 minutes and 8 seconds.

Don set a world track running record at Stompond Lane, Walton on 22nd October 1960, running 52 miles and 1110 yards in the allotted 6 hours.

Don, a former civil servant, worked tirelessly as a volunteer and official for Epsom & Ewell, Surrey County Athletic Association, South of England Athletics Association and others, and he played a key role in organising the finish and the timekeeping at the first London Marathon held on 29th March 1981.

Don won an award for Services to Athletics and Running at the England Athletics South East Awards in November 2023. You can read more about this here: https://www.englandathletics.org/news/south-east-volunteer-awards-evening/
